How to pray when you are worn out

When you are worn out, you can come to God tired and say so. You do not need energy to pray. Jesus invited people who were weary and heavy laden to come to Him. When the prophet Elijah collapsed, God's first answer was sleep and food.

What did Jesus offer the weary?

28Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

A yoke was the wooden frame that harnessed working animals together, and teachers in Jesus' day spoke of their teaching as a yoke. Jesus calls His own yoke easy and His burden light. Many readers hear in this relief from crushing religious demands. Christians have also long taken it as an invitation to anyone who is weary.

How did God care for Elijah?

4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

5Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.”

6Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.

7And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

8So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

Just before this, Elijah had stood against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Read 1 Kings 18 and 19. Then Queen Jezebel threatened his life, and he ran into the wilderness and asked to die. God did not lecture him. An angel woke him to eat, let him sleep again, and woke him to eat once more. Only later, at Horeb, did God speak to him about what came next.

Rest and food were part of God's care for Elijah. Looking after your body is not unspiritual.

Where can you go when you are overwhelmed?

1Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.

2From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David prays “from the end of the earth”, far from where he wants to be, with his heart overwhelmed. He asks to be led to a rock higher than himself. You can pray that in one breath.

How can you pray when you have nothing left?

  1. Tell God you are exhausted. One sentence is a whole prayer today.
  2. Read Matthew 11:28 and answer it: “I am coming.”
  3. Ask for one practical thing: sleep, help with a task, a day off.
  4. Ask God to show you what you can put down.

For example: “Jesus, I am worn out. I am coming to You as I am. Give me rest, and show me what I can put down. Amen.” This is a prepared example. A shorter prayer is fine.

When is it more than tiredness?

If the exhaustion lasts for weeks, or you feel numb or hopeless, talk to a doctor. Burnout and depression are real and treatable. If you feel as Elijah did, that you would rather die, tell someone today and contact your local emergency number or a crisis line.

If you would like help finding words, write a prayer. If you cannot sleep even though you are exhausted, read what to pray when you cannot sleep.
